Sustainability is important to many consumers these days. As they try to be more conscious of the impact we have on the Earth, what better way to show them you care than to help them understand the sustainable programs of your favorite banana company?
While the nature of the organic food industry itself lends itself to sustainable practices, there are many other things that we at Organics Unlimited do to help preserve and improve the environment. Here are a few examples that might be worth talking to your customers about:
- Organic means that there is no use of harmful chemicals for fertilizing or extermination of pests. This protects the air, the fruit, and the workers who grow our bananas.
- Distribution & Sourcing – since our bananas come primarily from Mexico, they are harvested, packed and shipped directly from the farms via truck. This system reduces the carbon footprint of the fruit.
- In an area where rainfall is plentiful, the use of water for irrigation still becomes part of the sustainability program. Through new wells on the farm property, irrigation can supplement rainfall in drier months with less waste of water through evaporation. And being water conscious, all farms are built with a focus on drainage to ensure successful crops during periods of heavy rain.
- Waste Diversion – In the growing process, all by- products from the bananas are used to supplement the soil for future growing. The farms have a composting facility to generate natural nutrition. In addition to green waste, Organics Unlimited has a policy of recycling that is in effect at all facilities.
- Packaging – The focus of all packaging is to provide easy point of sale at retail, and help retail checkers differentiate between organic and conventionally grown produce.
- Labor – the GROW program helps us provide income and lifestyle for farm workers that means that we have a sustainable work force.
