GROW by Organics Unlimited was created 10 years ago as a way to involve consumers in raising funds to assist the communities where Organics Unlimited bananas are grown. With the financial support of GROW banana purchases, Project Amigo, a non-profit partner in Mexico, is able to provide residents of the Colima, Mexico region with literacy, vision, dental and hearing clinics and also helps establish children’s educational programs, scholarships and boarding homes.
Many students in Colima would not be able to continue their studies past a young age if it weren’t for the educational scholarships that GROW banana purchases fund. To celebrate their success, we’d like to highlight two GROW scholars that are turning into young adults and pursuing their dreams.
Maria Dolores:
“Since the time I began as a GROW student, I have changed a lot.”
Maria Dolores is 22 years old and has been a GROW student for 9 years. She is in her final semesters at university for software engineering. Someday, she dreams of owning her own web programming company. First, she plans on spending some time working at a company where she can continue learning more about her field.
“Since the time I began as a GROW student, I have changed a lot. Before I was very shy, barely interacting with anyone. But with time, I learned to relate to more people and enjoy spending time with others, learning important values from them and forming strong friendships.”
She will remember the friendships she’s made over her time as a GROW scholar. She continues to enjoy spending time with her closest friends, confiding in them and listening to their points of view, as she prepares to find a job and enter her career.
Heraclio:
“GROW has given me the power to achieve my dreams.”
Heraclio has been a GROW student for 9 years. He has just finished his studies and presented his thesis in Agricultural Engineering.
GROW has changed my life completely,” he said. “Thanks to this program and everyone involved, I’ve had the opportunity to study and earn my professional license. It has made me proud, content and very appreciative to GROW for the power to achieve my dreams and begin a professional career.”
Heraclio would someday like to be his own boss on a farm, growing produce such as bananas, lemons, corn and other vegetables. This summer he will begin his career, look for new projects to begin and spend time with family and strengthening his friendships.
